Arabic Numerals: Why 1, 2, 3 Are Arabic and ١, ٢, ٣ Are Not

Here is the confusion this article exists to clear up. Arabic numerals are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The ones you are reading right now. They are called Arabic because Europe learned them from Arabic-speaking mathematicians, not because Arabs write with them exclusively.

The digits used across much of the Arab world today look completely different: ٠ ١ ٢ ٣ ٤ ٥ ٦ ٧ ٨ ٩. Those are called Eastern Arabic numerals, or Arabic-Indic numerals, because they came from India too. So both systems are "Arabic", both are originally Indian, and most people searching for one of them actually want the other. This guide covers both, plus how to say the numbers out loud in Arabic.

The Two Digit Systems, Side by Side

Two things jump out. ٥ looks like a zero and ٠ is a dot, which is the single most disorienting fact for a first-time reader. And ٦ looks like a 7, while ٧ looks like a V. If you are travelling in Egypt or the Gulf and reading prices, those three are what will trip you.

The system was invented in India. Arabic-speaking mathematicians adopted it, refined it, and crucially carried صفر (sifr), meaning "empty" or "nothing", into a working number. Al-Khwarizmi, whose name gave us the word algorithm, wrote the book that spread it. When it reached Europe via Latin translation, sifr became zephirum, then zero. The same root also gave English the word cipher.

So the digits Europeans call Arabic, Arabs sometimes call الأرقام الهندية, "the Indian numerals". Everybody is naming them after whoever they got them from.

Which System Is Actually Used Where

This is the practical part, and it is not uniform:

  • Egypt, Sudan, and most of the Gulf (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Yemen): Eastern Arabic digits ٠١٢٣ are common in everyday life, on price tags, on car plates, in newspapers.
  • Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya: the Western digits 0123 dominate. A Moroccan menu looks numerically like a French one.
  • Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq: both circulate, often on the same page.
  • Digital everywhere: keyboards, banking apps and international business lean Western.

Crucially, the digits run left to right even inside right-to-left Arabic text. The sentence flows right to left; the number ١٩٩٥ does not flip. This surprises everyone the first time.

Pronunciation: What the Transliteration Hides

Arabic numbers have sounds English simply does not use.

The ث in ثلاثة (three) is the "th" of "think". Fine so far. But the ح, the ع and the خ are made deep in the throat, and no respelling reaches them. Khamsa (five) starts with the scrape of the Scottish "loch". Arba'a (four) contains ع, a sound produced by tightening the throat, which has no English counterpart at all. Writing it as an apostrophe is a polite lie.

Numbers also change shape with what they count. Arabic has a famous rule where the number and the noun disagree in gender on purpose, and counted nouns behave differently in groups of three to ten versus eleven and up. That is a grammar article, not this one, but it is why the numbers you hear in a sentence rarely look like the dictionary form.

This is exactly where written guides run out of road. A transliteration cannot hand you a pharyngeal consonant, and reading khamsa off a page trains a sound that is not the sound. The only fix is to hear a native say the whole word, then say it back out loud, several times, until your throat stops resisting. Reading Eastern Arabic Digits: A Field Guide

The ones that actually cause errors:

  • ٠ is zero, and it is a dot. Not a circle.
  • ٥ is five, and it looks exactly like a Western zero. This is the big one. A price of ٥٠ is fifty, not five.
  • ٦ is six, which reads as a 7 to a Western eye.
  • ٧ is seven, which reads as a V.
  • ٨ is eight, an upside-down V.
  • ١ is one, ٢ is two, ٣ is three: these three are close enough to be safe.
  • ٤ is four, a mirrored 3.

Learn ٠ and ٥ first. Those two carry most of the risk of paying ten times what you meant to.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Thinking "Arabic numerals" means ١٢٣. It means 123. If you want the other set, search Eastern Arabic or Arabic-Indic numerals.
  2. Reading ٥ as zero. The single most expensive mistake on this page.
  3. Assuming the whole Arab world uses the same digits. Morocco and Egypt do not.
  4. Expecting numbers to run right to left. They do not, even inside Arabic text.
  5. Trusting the apostrophe in transliteration. In arba'a and sab'a that mark is a real consonant you have to learn by ear.

Bonus: The Numbers You Will Use First

  • Prices: كم الثمن؟ (kam al-thaman?), "how much is it?"
  • Your phone number, read digit by digit: واحد, اثنان, ثلاثة...
  • Tens: عشرون (twenty), ثلاثون (thirty), مئة (one hundred), ألف (one thousand).

Learn zero through ten by ear, learn to spot ٠ and ٥ on sight, and you can read a price tag from Cairo to Dubai. The rest is the same arithmetic you already know, in a costume you can now recognise.
