🇦🇱 Free CEFR placement test

Albanian proficiency test

Twenty questions, about five minutes, and an informal estimate of your Albanian grammar, vocabulary and reading level, using the CEFR scale as a guide.

Question 1 of 20~5 min left

Përshëndetje, unë ___ Ana. Po ti?

No feedback until the end, on purpose: guessing from the corrections would skew your result. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

What your result actually means

The test places you between two levels of the CEFR, the six-level scale used by universities, employers and official certificates across Europe. A range is the honest output of twenty questions: adaptive tests such as the Oxford Placement Test ask 40 to 45 items, and DIALANG around thirty per skill, precisely because pinning a single level takes far more evidence.

LevelNameWhat you can do
A1BeginnerIntroduce yourself, order, ask prices, survive a short trip.
A2ElementaryTalk about your day, your past and your plans in simple sentences.
B1IntermediateHold a conversation on familiar topics and travel without falling back on English.
B2Upper intermediateArgue a point, follow films and news, work in the language.
C1AdvancedExpress yourself precisely on abstract topics and catch implied meaning.
C2ProficientIrony, register, specialised texts: near-native command.

What levelling up means in Albanian

Albanian forms its own branch of Indo-European. Its vocabulary includes inherited words and many loans from languages such as Latin, Greek, Slavic languages and Turkish. Definite noun forms use endings, and nouns inflect for case. The admirative has distinctive verb forms that can express surprise or newly discovered information: paska ardhur can convey that someone has arrived unexpectedly. Comparable admirative uses occur in other Balkan languages, including Bulgarian and Macedonian.

How the test is built

  • Twenty questions, three skills — 10 grammar, 5 vocabulary, 5 reading. A test made only of conjugation tables measures what you can recognise, not what you understand.
  • Weighted scoring — each item is worth the rank of its level, from 1 point for A1 to 6 for C2, and the bands sit at the midpoints between the scores a typical A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 candidate would post. One slip on an easy item does not sink your result; one lucky guess on a hard item does not inflate it.
  • Guessing is priced in — a wrong answer gives back a third of the item’s weight, which is exactly what random guessing earns on a four-option question. Guessing is worth nothing on average, so the skip button costs you nothing.
  • What the questions actually cover — Jam, definite and indefinite noun forms, the simple past, the ablative after pranë, dative noun forms and linking-article agreement, the subjunctive after verbs of wanting, unreal conditions, the admirative mood, counterfactual concessions with edhe sikur and sado, the adverb aktualisht, the collocation marr jetë, and five reading passages ending in one built entirely on irony.
  • No regional trap — any question whose correct answer depended on one country or one dialect was rewritten. Where standard varieties disagree, the item was dropped rather than arbitrated.

Proficiency test, placement test, level test: which is which

People search for all three, and they are not quite the same thing. A proficiency test measures what you can do against a public standard and usually ends in a certificate someone else will read — Albanian language examination and certificate is one. A placement test exists to put you in the right class, so it is short, unofficial and only has to be right to within one level. A level test is the everyday name for the same thing when nobody is enrolling you in anything.

This page is a placement test in the technical sense: it estimates your Albanian level on the CEFR scale in about five minutes, tells you which two levels you sit between, and hands you nothing you could show an employer. If you need that, sit one of the exams above. If you need to know which book to open tonight, this is the right tool — and it is free, with no account and no email.

How long each level takes

Levels are not evenly spaced: A1 is a few weekends, C1 is a few years. The ranges below are guided-study hours counted cumulatively from zero — orders of magnitude, not promises. They are scaled from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, which puts professional working proficiency for an English speaker at roughly 1,100 classroom hours in Albanian. Those are hours of intensive, supervised classes, with selected students: read them as a floor rather than a forecast.

LevelHours from zeroWhat it buys you
A1100–150 hIntroduce yourself, order, ask prices, survive a short trip.
A2250–350 hTalk about your day, your past and your plans in simple sentences.

What to do next, depending on where you landed

If you landed around A1–A2

Learn nouns in both their indefinite and definite forms from the start, because the ending carries the definiteness that English puts in a separate word, and the two shapes are what every case ending builds on. Pronunciation is regular, so read aloud early, and treat the alphabet's digraphs as single letters.

If you landed around B1

The subjunctive with të is your ceiling, since Albanian uses it for many complements expressed with an infinitive in English, alongside constructions such as për të: dua të shkoj means I want to go. Add the case endings attached to definite nouns. Collect the sentences you could not build this week, correct them once, and drill them aloud until the forms stop needing thought.

If you landed around B2–C1

The admirative is what separates advanced Albanian from good Albanian: it carries surprise, irony and reported scepticism in a single verb form, and learners who never use it sound flat. Beyond that, Gheg speech in the north differs from the Tosk-based standard. Read Panorama or Koha, listen to broadcasts, and rebuild each new construction around your own life.

This test and the official Albanian exams

A placement quiz and a certificate answer different questions. This one tells you what to study next, in five minutes, for free. The exams below tell an employer or a university what you can do, on paper, for a fee and a scheduled date. Use the first to prepare for the second.

ExamAwarded byWhat it is
Albanian language examination and certificateUniversity of Tirana, Faculty of History and PhilologyThe faculty offers a written and oral Albanian examination, including for citizenship applications. Candidates can register for A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 or a general level. Check the faculty and receiving authority for the level and documentation your application requires.

The university examination is a documented assessment route. This informal online test does not replace it or establish eligibility for citizenship, residence or study.

Why twenty questions and not fifty

Because the extra thirty would buy you less than you think. A fixed-form test gains precision slowly: what actually separates a serious placement test is adaptivity — picking each question based on how you answered the last one, so nobody wastes time on items far below or far above their level. Without that, doubling the length mostly doubles the boredom, and an abandoned test measures nothing at all.

So this one is deliberately short and deliberately modest: it brackets you between two levels, tells you which skill is dragging, and sends you back to studying. If you need a single certified level on paper, sit a Albanian language examination and certificate exam. If you need to know whether to open a B1 or a B2 book tonight, five minutes here is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is this test in Gheg or Tosk?

It uses standard Albanian, which is based on Tosk and is the form taught, written and broadcast in Albania and Kosovo. A Gheg speaker will follow all of it while noticing forms they would say differently.

How accurate is this Albanian level test?

This is an informal estimate, not a certificate or a validated CEFR placement. Twenty fixed questions sample grammar, vocabulary and reading; they do not assess speaking, listening or writing. Use the result to guide practice, and take an appropriate official assessment if you need proof of proficiency.

What is the admirative mood?

A set of verb forms expressing surprise, doubt or hearsay. Ka ardhur states that he has arrived; paska ardhur adds that this is unexpected or newly discovered. Very few languages mark that distinction in the verb itself.

Is Albanian related to Greek or Italian?

It forms its own branch of Indo-European, so it is distantly related to both and descended from neither. Centuries of contact have left Latin, Greek, Slavic and Turkish loanwords, which is where the occasional familiar word comes from.

How is my level calculated?

Each question is worth the rank of its level, from 1 point for A1 to 6 for C2. A wrong answer gives back a third of that weight, exactly what random guessing earns on a four-option question, so guessing is worth nothing on average and skipping costs nothing extra.

Is the test free? Do I need an account?

Completely free, no signup, no email. Your answers stay in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

I got B1. What should I do next?

B1 in Albanian usually means comfortable conversation with unstable noun endings. The way up is volume of real sentences with native audio and spaced repetition, built around what you personally need to say, which is exactly how Hyperpolyglot works.

Can I retake the test?

As often as you like, but the questions never change, so an immediate retake measures memory rather than Albanian. Leave a few weeks between attempts if you want a meaningful comparison.
