The test places you between two levels of the CEFR, the six-level scale used by universities, employers and official certificates across Europe. A range is the honest output of twenty questions: adaptive tests such as the Oxford Placement Test ask 40 to 45 items, and DIALANG around thirty per skill, precisely because pinning a single level takes far more evidence.

Indonesian uses the Latin alphabet, has no grammatical gender, and does not conjugate verbs for person or tense. Words such as sudah, belum and sedang help express time and aspect. Affixes build related words such as ajar, belajar, mengajar and pelajaran. Formal and conversational usage differ, so practise reading and listening as well as everyday conversation.
People search for all three, and they are not quite the same thing. A proficiency test measures what you can do against a public standard and usually ends in a certificate someone else will read — UKBI is one. A placement test exists to put you in the right class, so it is short, unofficial and only has to be right to within one level. A level test is the everyday name for the same thing when nobody is enrolling you in anything.
This page is a placement test in the technical sense: it estimates your Indonesian level on the CEFR scale in about five minutes, tells you which two levels you sit between, and hands you nothing you could show an employer. Levels are not evenly spaced: A1 is a few weekends, C1 is a few years. The ranges below are guided-study hours counted cumulatively from zero — orders of magnitude, not promises. They are scaled from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, which puts professional working proficiency for an English speaker at roughly 900 classroom hours in Indonesian. Those are hours of intensive, supervised classes, with selected students: read them as a floor rather than a forecast.

Use the easy start well. With no conjugation to memorise, your early effort belongs in vocabulary and in the small words that carry time and aspect: sudah, belum, sedang, akan. Learn the difference between tidak and bukan properly now, since it is the first error that marks a beginner, and build sentences about your own day rather than collecting isolated words.
Affixes are your ceiling. Once me-, ber-, di-, ke-an and pe-an are automatic, you stop guessing and start recognising whole families of words from one root. This is also where the passive matters: Indonesian uses it far more readily than English, and a sentence built actively where a native would use di- sounds translated. Collect what you could not express this week and rebuild it with the right affix.
Build your range across formal and conversational Indonesian. Read news and longer arguments, paying attention to affixes, passive constructions and connectors such as meskipun and sekalipun. Listen to both prepared and spontaneous speech, then practise using the expressions in your own sentences.

BIPA is Indonesian-language teaching for foreign speakers, rather than one national examination. Course certificates and placement levels depend on the provider and should not be treated as interchangeable with a UKBI result.
Because the extra thirty would buy you less than you think. A fixed-form test gains precision slowly: what actually separates a serious placement test is adaptivity — picking each question based on how you answered the last one, so nobody wastes time on items far below or far above their level. Without that, doubling the length mostly doubles the boredom, and an abandoned test measures nothing at all.
So this one is deliberately short and deliberately modest: it brackets you between two levels, tells you which skill is dragging, and sends you back to studying. How accurate is this Indonesian level test?
This short quiz gives a rough learning estimate, not a certificate or a validated CEFR placement. It samples grammar, vocabulary and reading, but does not assess listening, speaking or extended writing. Use an official examination or a full placement assessment when you need a documented level.
Is Indonesian the same as Malay?
They are closely related standards, mutually intelligible for the most part, but this test uses Indonesian as written and taught in Indonesia. A Malay speaker will follow most of it and will notice different vocabulary choices at the higher levels.
Does the CEFR apply to Indonesian?
The CEFR can be used as a learning framework for Indonesian, but the national UKBI reports its own seven bands. The A1–C2 labels in this quiz are approximate learning guides and do not convert into UKBI scores.
Why are affixes tested so heavily?
Because they are where Indonesian level shows. Casual speech drops them and remains perfectly understandable, so a learner can sound fluent while being unable to read a formal letter. Testing the affix system is the fairest way to tell those two states apart.
How is my level calculated?
Questions are weighted from 1 point at A1 to 6 at C2. A correct answer earns its weight; a wrong answer subtracts one third of that weight, while a skipped question scores zero. Random guessing therefore earns zero points on average.
