🇲🇰 Free CEFR placement test

Macedonian proficiency test

Twenty questions, about five minutes, and an honest estimate of where your Macedonian sits on the CEFR scale, from first phrases to near-native.

Question 1 of 20~5 min left

Здраво, јас ___ Ана. (Zdravo, jas ___ Ana.)

No feedback until the end, on purpose: guessing from the corrections would skew your result. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

What your result actually means

The test places you between two levels of the CEFR, the six-level scale used by universities, employers and official certificates across Europe. A range is the honest output of twenty questions: adaptive tests such as the Oxford Placement Test ask 40 to 45 items, and DIALANG around thirty per skill, precisely because pinning a single level takes far more evidence.

LevelNameWhat you can do
A1BeginnerIntroduce yourself, order, ask prices, survive a short trip.
A2ElementaryTalk about your day, your past and your plans in simple sentences.
B1IntermediateHold a conversation on familiar topics and travel without falling back on English.
B2Upper intermediateArgue a point, follow films and news, work in the language.
C1AdvancedExpress yourself precisely on abstract topics and catch implied meaning.
C2ProficientIrony, register, specialised texts: near-native command.

What levelling up means in Macedonian

Macedonian is a South Slavic language with a reduced nominal case system and postposed definite articles. Its three article series can distinguish neutral reference, proximity and distance: книгата, книгава, книгана. Its verb system includes aspect, a perfect built with има plus a participle, and l-participle constructions used for perfect and reported information.

How the test is built

  • Twenty questions, three skills — 10 grammar, 5 vocabulary, 5 reading. A test made only of conjugation tables measures what you can recognise, not what you understand.
  • Weighted scoring — each item is worth the rank of its level, from 1 point for A1 to 6 for C2, and the bands sit at the midpoints between the scores a typical A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 candidate would post. One slip on an easy item does not sink your result; one lucky guess on a hard item does not inflate it.
  • Guessing is priced in — a wrong answer gives back a third of the item’s weight, which is exactly what random guessing earns on a four-option question. Guessing is worth nothing on average, so the skip button costs you nothing.
  • What the questions actually cover — The copula, postposed and proximal definite articles, the aorist, transport prepositions, the да-construction, unreal conditions, the perfect with има, agreement of the l-participle in reported information, adverbial participles with clitic placement and subject control, the reply нема на што, the expression во моментов, the adjective воздржан, the collocation спроведен во дело, the adjective неоснован, and five reading passages testing explicit information, conditions, inference, author stance, and irony and implicature, with transliteration in beginner questions.
  • No regional trap — any question whose correct answer depended on one country or one dialect was rewritten. Where standard varieties disagree, the item was dropped rather than arbitrated.

Proficiency test, placement test, level test: which is which

People search for all three, and they are not quite the same thing. A proficiency test measures what you can do against a public standard and usually ends in a certificate someone else will read — TEMAK is one. A placement test exists to put you in the right class, so it is short, unofficial and only has to be right to within one level. A level test is the everyday name for the same thing when nobody is enrolling you in anything.

This page is a placement test in the technical sense: it estimates your Macedonian level on the CEFR scale in about five minutes, tells you which two levels you sit between, and hands you nothing you could show an employer. If you need that, sit one of the exams above. If you need to know which book to open tonight, this is the right tool — and it is free, with no account and no email.

How long each level takes

Levels are not evenly spaced: A1 is a few weekends, C1 is a few years. The ranges below are guided-study hours counted cumulatively from zero — orders of magnitude, not promises. They are scaled from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, which puts professional working proficiency for an English speaker at roughly 1,100 classroom hours in Macedonian. Those are hours of intensive, supervised classes, with selected students: read them as a floor rather than a forecast.

LevelHours from zeroWhat it buys you

A2250–350 hTalk about your day, your past and your plans in simple sentences.

What to do next, depending on where you landed

If you landed around A1–A2

Make use of the reduced nominal case system, and put the effort into the article system instead: it attaches to the end of the noun, changes with gender and number, and has three distance forms. Learn Cyrillic in the first week, Macedonian has its own letters ѓ, ќ, џ, and build sentences about your own day so the articles get practised in context.

If you landed around B1

Two things move you up. There is no infinitive, so wherever English would use one you need да plus a conjugated verb. And the perfect with има is used constantly for experience and results. Collect the sentences you could not finish this week, correct them once, and drill them aloud.

If you landed around B2–C1

The l-participle participates in both perfect constructions and reported or non-confirmative uses; context determines whether it presents prior experience, a result or relayed information. Read Nova Makedonija or Meta, listen to news bulletins, and compare how speakers frame witnessed and reported events.

This test and the official Macedonian exams

A placement quiz and a certificate answer different questions. This one tells you what to study next, in five minutes, for free. The exams below tell an employer or a university what you can do, on paper, for a fee and a scheduled date. Use the first to prepare for the second.

TEMAK is a university proficiency test. This quiz does not replace its certificate; confirm the qualification required by your institution.

Why twenty questions and not fifty

Because the extra thirty would buy you less than you think. A fixed-form test gains precision slowly: what actually separates a serious placement test is adaptivity — picking each question based on how you answered the last one, so nobody wastes time on items far below or far above their level. Without that, doubling the length mostly doubles the boredom, and an abandoned test measures nothing at all.

So this one is deliberately short and deliberately modest: it brackets you between two levels, tells you which skill is dragging, and sends you back to studying. If you need a single certified level on paper, sit a TEMAK exam. If you need to know whether to open a B1 or a B2 book tonight, five minutes here is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Is Macedonian the same as Bulgarian?

They are very close and largely mutually intelligible, sharing the loss of cases and the postposed article, but they are separate standards with their own norms and official status. Macedonian has the three-way article distinction and uses има perfects more systematically.

How accurate is this Macedonian level test?

This is a rough estimate of grammar, vocabulary and reading, not a certificate. Twenty fixed questions cannot establish an overall CEFR level or assess speaking and listening. Use the result to guide practice.

Do I need to read Cyrillic?

A1 and A2 prompts and the beginner reading passage include transliteration. Later questions use Macedonian Cyrillic, and reading the script is part of this quiz.

Is Macedonian easier than Serbian?

Many beginners find the noun system more approachable because Macedonian has largely lost productive nominal case declension, though vocative forms and limited case remnants survive. Serbian retains a fuller case system, while Macedonian asks learners to master its verb and article systems.

How is my level calculated?

Each question is worth the rank of its level, from 1 point for A1 to 6 for C2. A wrong answer gives back a third of that weight, exactly what random guessing earns on a four-option question, so guessing is worth nothing on average and skipping costs nothing extra.

Is the test free? Do I need an account?

Completely free, no signup, no email. Your answers stay in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

I got B1. What should I do next?

B1 in Macedonian usually means easy conversation and hesitation with the verb system. The way up is volume of real sentences with native audio and spaced repetition, built around what you personally need to say, which is exactly how Hyperpolyglot works.

Can I retake the test?

As often as you like, but the questions never change, so an immediate retake measures memory rather than Macedonian. Leave a few weeks between attempts if you want a meaningful comparison.
