🇸🇪 Free CEFR placement test

Swedish proficiency test

Twenty questions, about five minutes, and an honest estimate of where your Swedish sits on the CEFR scale — from first phrases to near-native.

Question 1 of 20~5 min left

Hej, jag ___ Ana. Och du?

No feedback until the end, on purpose: guessing from the corrections would skew your result. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.

What your result actually means

The test places you between two levels of the CEFR, the six-level scale used by universities, employers and official certificates across Europe. A range is the honest output of twenty questions: adaptive tests such as the Oxford Placement Test ask 40 to 45 items, and DIALANG around thirty per skill, precisely because pinning a single level takes far more evidence.

LevelNameWhat you can do
A1BeginnerIntroduce yourself, order, ask prices, survive a short trip.
A2ElementaryTalk about your day, your past and your plans in simple sentences.
B1IntermediateHold a conversation on familiar topics and travel without falling back on English.
B2Upper intermediateArgue a point, follow films and news, work in the language.
C1AdvancedExpress yourself precisely on abstract topics and catch implied meaning.
C2ProficientIrony, register, specialised texts: near-native command.

What levelling up means in Swedish

Swedish grammar is genuinely light for an English speaker: nouns lack a productive case-declension system, although pronouns retain distinctions such as jag/mig; verbs have no endings by person, and the vocabulary contains many recognisable cousins. The level is decided elsewhere. En-words and ett-words have to be learned with every noun, because definiteness in Swedish is a suffix and then doubles up when an adjective appears, which is how det största huset gets three definite markers in one phrase. Beyond that, the barrier is pitch accent and the speed of real speech, so learners routinely read at B2 while listening lags a full level behind.

How the test is built

  • Twenty questions, three skills10 grammar, 5 vocabulary, 5 reading. A test made only of conjugation tables measures what you can recognise, not what you understand.
  • Weighted scoringeach item is worth the rank of its level, from 1 point for A1 to 6 for C2, and the bands sit at the midpoints between the scores a typical A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2 candidate would post. One slip on an easy item does not sink your result; one lucky guess on a hard item does not inflate it.
  • Guessing is priced ina wrong answer gives back a third of the item’s weight, which is exactly what random guessing earns on a four-option question. Guessing is worth nothing on average, so the skip button costs you nothing.
  • What the questions actually coverHeta for introductions, the indefinite article en, the past tense, verb-second order after a fronted adverbial, double definiteness with a superlative, inte in subordinate clauses, unreal conditions, the s-passive, inverted conditionals with vore, negation scope and anteriority with påstå sig, lagom, fika, vidlyftig, komma till stånd and fästa avseende vid, and five reading passages testing explicit information, conditions, emotional inference, author stance and irony.
  • No regional trapany question whose correct answer depended on one country or one dialect was rewritten. Where standard varieties disagree, the item was dropped rather than arbitrated.

Proficiency test, placement test, level test: which is which

People search for all three, and they are not quite the same thing. A proficiency test measures what you can do against a public standard and usually ends in a certificate someone else will read — Swedex is one. A placement test exists to put you in the right class, so it is short, unofficial and only has to be right to within one level. A level test is the everyday name for the same thing when nobody is enrolling you in anything.

This page is a placement test in the technical sense: it estimates your Swedish level on the CEFR scale in about five minutes, tells you which two levels you sit between, and hands you nothing you could show an employer. If you need that, sit one of the exams above. If you need to know which book to open tonight, this is the right tool — and it is free, with no account and no email.

How long each level takes

Levels are not evenly spaced: A1 is a few weekends, C1 is a few years. The ranges below are guided-study hours counted cumulatively from zero — orders of magnitude, not promises. They are scaled from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, which puts professional working proficiency for an English speaker at roughly 600 to 750 classroom hours in Swedish. Those are hours of intensive, supervised classes, with selected students: read them as a floor rather than a forecast.

What to do next, depending on where you landed

If you landed around A1–A2

Learn every noun as en or ett from the first day: the gender decides the definite ending, the adjective ending and the pronoun you use later, and there is no reliable rule to recover it from. Beyond that, put your effort into listening. Swedish spelling hides a great deal of what is actually said, and beginners who read first and listen later build a version of the language nobody speaks.

If you landed around B1

Two things move you up. First, definiteness in all its combinations, since ett hus, huset, det stora huset and mitt hus follow different patterns that have to be automatic. Second, subordinate clauses, where inte jumps in front of the verb and trips up almost everyone. Write out the sentences you stumbled on this week, fix them once, and say them aloud until the order stops needing thought.

If you landed around B2–C1

What remains is register and idiom: the s-passive that formal Swedish prefers, conditional inversions such as vore jag du, and fixed pairs like komma till stånd or ta upp till diskussion. Read Dagens Nyheter, listen to P1, harvest the expressions you would have built differently, and rebuild each into a sentence about your own life.

This test and the official Swedish exams

A placement quiz and a certificate answer different questions. This one tells you what to study next, in five minutes, for free. The exams below tell an employer or a university what you can do, on paper, for a fee and a scheduled date. Use the first to prepare for the second.

ExamAwarded byWhat it is
SwedexFolkuniversitetetAn international certificate offered through the A2/B1 and B2/C1 examinations, which assess reading, listening, writing and speaking.
TisusStockholm UniversityAn accepted route to meeting university Swedish requirements, equivalent to Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3. Tisus has no official CEFR mapping.
SFI national testsSwedish National Agency for EducationThe tests attached to the free Swedish for Immigrants courses, running up to roughly B1 and used for residence and study purposes.

Why twenty questions and not fifty

Because the extra thirty would buy you less than you think. A fixed-form test gains precision slowly: what actually separates a serious placement test is adaptivity — picking each question based on how you answered the last one, so nobody wastes time on items far below or far above their level. Without that, doubling the length mostly doubles the boredom, and an abandoned test measures nothing at all.

So this one is deliberately short and deliberately modest: it brackets you between two levels, tells you which skill is dragging, and sends you back to studying. If you need a single certified level on paper, sit a Swedex exam. If you need to know whether to open a B1 or a B2 book tonight, five minutes here is enough.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is this Swedish level test?

It gives you a range, not a certificate. Twenty fixed questions cannot place you as precisely as Swedex or Tisus, and they cannot hear you speak. What they do reliably is bracket you between two CEFR levels, which is enough to pick your next course.

What is the CEFR scale?

The Common European Framework of Reference describes six levels: A1 and A2 for basic users, B1 and B2 for independent users, and C1 and C2 for proficient users. Swedex offers A2/B1 and B2/C1 examinations. Tisus is an accepted qualification for university Swedish requirements, equivalent to Swedish 3 or Swedish as a second language 3; comparisons with C1 are unofficial because Tisus is not linked to the CEFR.

Why do en-words and ett-words matter so much?

Because they are load-bearing. The gender of a noun decides its definite ending, the form of any adjective in front of it and the pronoun that refers back to it, so a wrong guess propagates through the whole sentence. Vocabulary learned without the article has to be relearned.

Is listening tested?

No, this is a reading-based quiz, and that is a real limitation for Swedish in particular. Spoken Swedish reduces and merges far more than the spelling suggests, so many learners score a level higher here than they manage in conversation. If your result feels generous, that gap is why.

How is my level calculated?

Each question is worth the rank of its level, from 1 point for A1 to 6 for C2. A wrong answer gives back a third of that weight, exactly what random guessing earns on a four-option question, so guessing is worth nothing on average and skipping costs nothing extra.

Is the test free? Do I need an account?

Completely free, no signup, no email. Your answers stay in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

I got B1. What should I do next?

B1 in Swedish usually means solid reading and hesitant speech, often because Swedes switch to English at the first pause. The way up is volume of real sentences with native audio and spaced repetition, built around what you personally need to say — which is exactly how Hyperpolyglot works.

Can I retake the test?

As often as you like, but the questions never change, so an immediate retake measures memory rather than Swedish. Leave a few weeks between attempts if you want a meaningful comparison.
