How the trainer works

  • Study a group — see the characters with their sounds, in an order designed for Greek alphabet (not just alphabetical).
  • Quiz yourself — four choices per character; wrong answers come back until they stick.
  • Master everything — a character is mastered after two correct answers, and your progress stays in your browser between visits.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Greek alphabet take to learn?

A few days at most: you already know a dozen letters from maths and science (pi, sigma, delta, omega), so the quiz mostly has to fix the sounds and the handful of genuinely new shapes.

Does this teach ancient or modern Greek pronunciation?

Modern Greek, the one spoken today: beta sounds v, eta and upsilon sound ee. If you read the letters the ancient way, Greeks will still understand, but you will sound like a maths lecture.

Why does sigma have two lowercase forms?

Sigma is written one way inside a word and another way at the end of a word. Same letter, same sound: it is the only Greek letter that does this.
