Here is the first thing nobody tells you about numbers in Urdu: you cannot build them from rules the way you can in English or Spanish. There is no clean "twenty-three, twenty-four, twenty-five" pattern. Almost every number from 1 to 99 is its own word, and native speakers learned them one at a time as children. You will too, and with the right method it goes faster than you think. Let's start with the essentials.
Urdu Numbers 1 to 10
Urdu uses its own numeral glyphs (۱، ۲، ۳), which read left to right even though Urdu text reads right to left. The words below are what you actually say.

A few pronunciation notes. The "aa" in chaar and saat is a long open vowel, like the "a" in "father." The "chh" in chhay and the "th" in aath are aspirated, meaning you release a small puff of air. These aspirated consonants are hard to get from text alone, which is why hearing native audio from day one matters so much for Urdu.
Urdu Numbers 11 to 20
This is where the irregularity starts. Compare "teen" (3) with "terah" (13): related, but you could not have guessed it.

Notice 19. It is not "nineteen" built from nine and ten. It is "unnees," literally something like "one less than twenty." This pattern, where the number just before a round ten gets an "un-" prefix, repeats through the whole system: 29 is untees, 39 is untaalees, 49 is unchaas. It is one of the few reliable patterns you get, so hold onto it.

Careful with 60: "saath" (سٹھ with a retroflex t) sounds close to "saat" (7). The aspiration and the retroflex consonant are the difference, and again, audio beats any written explanation here.
Why 1 to 99 Is the Hard Part (and How to Actually Learn It)
In English, once you know "twenty" and "three," you know "twenty-three." Urdu does not work like that. 23 is "teiees," 33 is "taintees," 43 is "taintaalees," 53 is "tirpan." The unit and the ten fuse into a single word, and the fusion is different almost every time. Linguists count the numbers from 1 to 99 in Urdu and Hindi as essentially 99 separate vocabulary items.
This changes the study strategy completely. You cannot learn a rule and generate the numbers; you have to memorize them, and memorization is exactly what spaced repetition (SRS) was built for. Treat each number as a flashcard, let the algorithm resurface the ones you keep missing (it will be 53, 67, and 84, not 20 and 25), and drill them with native audio so "saath" and "saat" stay distinct in your ear. Two shortcuts to prioritize:
- Learn the tens and the "un-" numbers first. Bees, tees, chaalees, pachaas plus unnees, untees, untaalees gets you the skeleton.
- Learn the numbers you will actually hear. Prices, ages, and times cluster around round numbers and small numbers. 1 to 30 plus the tens covers most real conversations.
Hundreds and Thousands: Sau and Hazaar
Above 100, Urdu suddenly becomes regular, almost as an apology for what came before.

You just stack: 350 is "teen sau pachaas" (three hundred fifty). 7,000 is "saat hazaar." The only trap is that the 1-to-99 chunk inside a big number is still irregular: 1,353 is "aik hazaar teen sau tirpan," and you need to know "tirpan" is 53.
Lakh and Crore: The South Asian Number System
Here is where Urdu diverges from the Western system entirely. Above 10,000, Urdu (like Hindi) does not count in millions. It uses two units you must know:

So 100,000 is "aik laakh" (one lakh), not "one hundred thousand." One million is "das laakh" (ten lakh). Ten million is "aik crore." A hundred million is "das crore."
Even the digit grouping changes: where English writes 10,000,000, South Asian convention writes 1,00,00,000, with commas every two digits after the first three. If you read Pakistani or Indian news, prices, or salaries, you will see lakh and crore constantly ("a 2 crore apartment," "50 lakh rupees"), and no one will translate them into millions for you. Learning these two words is non-negotiable.
Prices in Practice: Rupees at the Market
The currency in Pakistan is the rupee, روپیہ (rupiya), plural روپے (rupay). What you will hear:
- Kitna hai? (کتنا ہے؟) : how much is it?
- Do sau rupay : 200 rupees
- Derh sau (ڈیڑھ سو) : 150. "Derh" means one and a half, so "derh sau" is one and a half hundred. Extremely common.
- Dhaai sau (ڈھائی سو) : 250, from "dhaai," two and a half.
- Paanch sau ka note : a 500-rupee bill.
Derh and dhaai are worth learning early because they also work with hazaar (derh hazaar = 1,500) and laakh (dhaai laakh = 250,000). Vendors use them constantly, and quoting a counter-offer with "derh sau?" instead of holding up fingers changes the whole tone of the exchange.
One last practical note: in Pakistan, prices on signs usually appear in Western digits (150), while the Urdu numerals (۱۵۰) show up in traditional contexts, religious texts, and some official documents. Learn to recognize ۰ to ۹ passively, but put your active effort into the spoken words.
