How long does it take to learn hiragana?
Most learners read all 46 base hiragana within 3 to 7 days of short daily practice. Add a few more days for the dakuten variants and combo characters. This trainer tracks each character until you have answered it correctly twice.
Should I learn hiragana or katakana first?
Hiragana first: it covers grammar particles, word endings and most native words, so it unlocks reading immediately. Katakana mirrors the same sounds, so it comes quickly afterwards.
What are the small ya, yu, yo characters?
They combine with i-row kana to form single syllables: ki + small ya reads kya, shi + small yu reads shu. The Combos group of the trainer covers all of them.
Do I need to learn to write hiragana by hand?
Recognition comes first: reading unlocks everything else, and typing only needs romaji input. Handwriting is a fine later addition but should not delay your start.
